Dance School client meeting

The meeting was with Bernie and her daughter Yvette who run the dance school. The dance school based in Marsden has been running 40 years next year. They offer ballet, tap, modern dance and theatre including singing.

They have never had a prospectus or welcome pack and details to newcomers has always been quite adhoc in the past.

They currently have 200 pupils.

The purpose of the meeting was to clarify budget, the purpose of the book, how it would work across other platforms, the form and content of the book.

Before the meeting I had got some estimates for different sized books as detailed. I was also keen to encourage them to use a different typeface for the book than the one used on their current stationary . Mainly because I thought it dated the school and they needed a more contemporary edge to attract young mum and dads to bring boys and girls.

I came up with a few designs to show them what I meant:

Bernie immediately said she would not use that photo as the shoes looked worn and gave an unprofessional impression.  It made me realise how important it is that they chose the photographs for the book as Ballet is so technical that only they would have the expertise.

Bernie was keen to use the book digitally as well. The school have a Facebook group so this is possible. They aim to have 200 books printed which will be used to prmote the school and also be a welcome book with details of expected uniform. It will also explain Exams and the annual concerts. It is inportant to get across that the school promote Dance for all but they do expect a level of commitment .

The book will also showcase past students who have been sucessful in persuing careers in Dance. Also patrons of the school.

We agreed to use a square format and explore how the content would work across a 20 page 148x148mm format.

Yvette agreed to gather suitable photographs and also come up with the content for the book.  initially I want everything in their words however the content can be developed through contextual research.

I suggested they consider finding an image from 40 years ago when the school first opened which may be useful in conveying the rich history underpinning the school.
