Brief 4 Evaluation

I literally got the business cards and portfolio folder off Tom the morning of hand in so haven't taken any photographs of the final products but they are in my Module hand in.

Going forward the stock for the folder needs to be heavier than 175gsm as it does tear easily however I am pleased with the concept and the mid green colour blends well with the wooden business cards.  The business cards have been reasonably successful and Tom is really pleased with them I still think we could adjust the typeface so it is more readable . Tome has made 40 business cards all together.  He estimates it will cost £100 for 50 cards including his time which is comparable with the duplex GF smith cards I got printed.

Tom plans to use all the print collateral and also wants me to make him the large label for the End of Year Show as he is hoping to sell his chairs and table.

Overall all the design is accessible to Tom on a low budget and going forward I am going to show him how to update the Cargo website as he is planning to get more photographs after hand in.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Tom despite the problems as I really feel I've been able to help him with his PPD and hopefully help him secure a job

Brief 4 Tom Branding

Tom's photographs which arrived only on Wednesday afternoon before the ctit are absolutely awesome.  A photography student did them who has photographed lots of furniture students work.  They were so awesome that I decided to suggest to Tom that we produce a larger promotional piece.  Initially I was thinking a look book maybe with Japanese binding or binding screws however I think a presentation folder would offer him more flexibility and also the images can be laid out across a table.

I hadnt suggested this up to this point as we just had not got any images of his work and even though we had scheduled a photographer in I had know clue they would be so good. Also Tom is on a strict budget so I wanted to keep it well within budget for him.

Ive found some free templates to get me started with the design.  We have agreed that Tom will laser cut the folders as this has two benefits I dont have to queue for drop in print and also means we can laser cut the logo out at the same time.  I had ordered some GF Smith stock which is a close match to the green we had been using for his branding and Tom preferred that to the Racing Green.

A few ideas for inspiration.  I like the idea of including the wooden business card in the pack.

I have also found some free templates to get me started on printed.com

Brief 4 Toms Portfolio Website

Tom really wanted to buy his own Url so I could upgrade a Cargo account for him...he just hasnt got the budget for it so we have decided better a Cargo than no web presence at all.

I have been experimenting with different templates and customising the CSS slightly.  Tom really likes the black background websites however all his photographs will have plain white backgrounds and I just dont think they work.  Thankfully he agreed.

He initially liked this template (Apollo)

This is now starting to come together.  Its the only free full screen template they do.  Ive added his Cv as a landscape document using the actual stock Tom is going to send off to employers

To do list by brief

Sunday 12 May
To do list by brief

Whatever your ambitions or intentions, you should make sure that your work demonstrates and significant understanding of issues relating to message, meaning, audience, context and Function. Analysis of these issues should form the basis of the key deign decisions that you make throughout this project. Documenting your ongoing critical evaluation and selection will form the basis of an effective Design Practice.

Final print slot is Friday 24th May at 2pm

Brief One
Concept
A unique retail experience called Threads aimed at 12 to 24 year olds.  The experience will be a retail space which curates brands in the same way Urban Outfitters does however it will also incorporate subcultural threads and links including music, video and a social area to share their own ‘Threads’ The space will take advantage of new technology including chips in clothes which activate interactive mirrors and also Smart Phones.  The aim is the educate yong people to the significant cultural heritage which exists behind brands and ecourage them to share their own styles and stories.  In doing so it will subtley point to brands which have fake back stories such as Hollister by not including them in the arrange.  The aim would be to create a ‘teen range’ which will be cheaper then the adult sized counterparts.

Outcomes Bags, tags, signs, mockups of proposed interactive design, tshirts, infographic timeline of the links across time, four subcultures and ten brands.

The subcultures are Mod, Skinheads, Punks and Casuals.

The brands include Doc Martens, Fred Perry, Baracuta, Farah, Ben Sherman, Stone Island,  Gabicci,  Adidas, Lacoste, Vivian Westwood/ Newer brands weekend Offender, Pretty Green which are based on this culture ?  Maybe a record label or Ministry of Sound?  Stiff records?

Brief 4 Tom personal branding

As Tom has decided not to set a company up I am rethinking how to brand him personally so he can target companies for jobs:

He need a Formal CV to send off for jobs with a link to his portfolio either online or as a PDF.

He needs a Promotional piece to target places he would like to get a job.  The wooden business cards/mats could be accompanied by a folded CV/Portfolio.  Possibly a booklet or hotdog fold book.

I have had to use photos from the internet but these have given me idea for what shots we will take on the photoshoot nest week.

These are ideas for letterheads/Cv

Brief 4 CV/look book/ inspiration stocks

http://www.behance.net/gallery/R-J-Scott/7098259

A beautifully elegantly executed project by two BAGD alumni Passport

I like of the work is presented and also the simplicity of the concept.  I had already considered using the eco paper I had used for the LoftS pace project.  It represents  Tom's handcrafted sensibility and practice really well.  I have also ordered some GF Smith stock which should work well for this project. Maybe for a book cover... Toms is experiementing with the resin this week so will have a better idea of the colour.
