Brief 2 Evaluation

The brief was an unsuccessful at D&AD student awards I think perhaps in the main because it may not have been considered to be commercially viable ie the diamantes.  I believe the concept is strong especially the Festival Campaign

To do list by brief

Sunday 12 May
To do list by brief

Whatever your ambitions or intentions, you should make sure that your work demonstrates and significant understanding of issues relating to message, meaning, audience, context and Function. Analysis of these issues should form the basis of the key deign decisions that you make throughout this project. Documenting your ongoing critical evaluation and selection will form the basis of an effective Design Practice.

Final print slot is Friday 24th May at 2pm

Brief One
Concept
A unique retail experience called Threads aimed at 12 to 24 year olds.  The experience will be a retail space which curates brands in the same way Urban Outfitters does however it will also incorporate subcultural threads and links including music, video and a social area to share their own ‘Threads’ The space will take advantage of new technology including chips in clothes which activate interactive mirrors and also Smart Phones.  The aim is the educate yong people to the significant cultural heritage which exists behind brands and ecourage them to share their own styles and stories.  In doing so it will subtley point to brands which have fake back stories such as Hollister by not including them in the arrange.  The aim would be to create a ‘teen range’ which will be cheaper then the adult sized counterparts.

Outcomes Bags, tags, signs, mockups of proposed interactive design, tshirts, infographic timeline of the links across time, four subcultures and ten brands.

The subcultures are Mod, Skinheads, Punks and Casuals.

The brands include Doc Martens, Fred Perry, Baracuta, Farah, Ben Sherman, Stone Island,  Gabicci,  Adidas, Lacoste, Vivian Westwood/ Newer brands weekend Offender, Pretty Green which are based on this culture ?  Maybe a record label or Ministry of Sound?  Stiff records?

Group tutorial with Andy Lodge

We had a meeting with Andy to discuss progress and any problems.  My group was Kirsty Fruin, Francesca Pecquar and Jamie Flear.  I already knew both Kirsty and Francesca were really well on with their design practice.  Francesca had produced some amazing outcomes for three briefs already.

It was quite a wake up call as I am still very much in development with three of my briefs.

Brief 1
The Branding, Youth culture and lifestyle brief still very much in concept development.  I have an idea which I discussed with Andy later.

Brief 2
The D&AD Unilever brief is more or less finished apart from i wanted to make a couple of the printed products for photographing rather than mocking them up.

Brief 3
The Interior Design yearbook
I am quite concerned about what to actually put on the boards as my input as been behind the scenes as such.  I was involved in concept development and sorting out content and the thumbnails.  Sarah and Baljeet have carried out most of the final design and layout.

Brief 4
Branding
Branding brief for Tom Bent a furniture Student at Leeds College of Art.  Originally he wanted me to a brand a business for him however in the last week he has decided he needs personal branding so focusing on business cards, wooden promo mats, a form CV, letterhead and Promotional portfolio piece.  Tom has yet to decide what to do about an on line presence.  He has organised a photographer to take shots of his furniture.

Brief 5
Dance School Look Book
The books content is almost complete I am just awaiting for the client to approve the final version.  I am meeting a local printer to discus print costs and options.  I also want to make a more bespoke print version with some special finishes and GF Smith Card just for comparison to the cheaper commercial print.  The content in the book will be used to Design a website.

Brief 6
Design Context
I have a deadline to get the prints to Roger on Tuesday 21 May.  He only needs two days to bind and then it needs a day to rest.  He is case-binding with a flat back and black fabric cover.  The GF Smith citrine stock will be used for the end pages and a laser cut slipcase. (This will compliment my business cards)  I have two options to print either a local printer or an online one.  Will decide Thursday 16th May as need to send off the files that day to allow for postage.   Roger has recommended 100gsm stock and that I use four folded sheets which relates to 16 sides.
I am challenging my Indesign Skills by trying to use new functions (to me)

I have also submitted the Alumni competition brief and am part of the Geek Table brief.  Claudia is now leading this is a main brief so we all just need to submit some work for a printed publication.

Progress Crit

The crit today was really inspiring as some people had already made some awesome products.  My group was Luke O'Brien, Joe Warburton, Charlotte Bourke Yafet Bisrat and Max Gregory.

I showed the Alumni boards, D&AD Unilever boards, Tom summary development boards, the Dance school book ans summary of brief 1.

I received feedback from Max and Charlotte.  It was really useful.  I had specifically asked for feedback on the Alumni brief as I was handing the boards in.  I will scan in the feedback.  I was able to respond to this and change the boards ready for submission.  Max suggested having another board with highlighting the main identity for the Alumni which would communicate the concept clearly. They also suggested having smaller blocks of text.  There suggestion for more ranges of products is fair for the brief as a whole but to submit the brief only asked to contextualise the publication.

Basically the feedback was I needed to produce more 'physical' products which I already knew especially after seeing the work produced by others.  To be fair my strengths are concept development/ideas and the D&AD brief which is more or less finished had to be submitted based on digital mock ups due to the tight deadline.  I may make a couple of products for this to photograph and possibly hand in.

These were the questions I had prepared:

Questions – Lisa Whitaker Progress Crit
1. D&AD Unilever brief 2 Do you think I should produce some tangible products for this brief or are the mock ups sufficient?
 2. Brief 5 Dance School/ Do you think the type and layout needs further development? (Still need to add some content and some photos). The client has requested the typeface on the cover, any ideas how I could layout better?
 3. Alumni Brief- Please crit boards as I can still develop before had in tomorrow. What do you think of chosen logo?
 4. Brief 4 Branding brief/ I am going to design business cards, a website, promotional items such as wooden mats for in local teashops (the business will be in the Peak District. Any other suggestions? What do you think about wooden business cards for this brief?
 5. Any suggestions regarding the Youth brand brief would be gratefully received as I a still unsure which way to go with this brief but need it to really showcase my love of concept developing and push the range of products from this brief.
Action plan
One idea for Brief 1 which had started to form after seeing Yafet's Fontopoly game was possibly exploring a Brand Game/ something fun.

The strengths are research although I need to have more visual design related research. I need more design development and physical products.

I also need to plan the DC book, form and content.

I do feel slightly intimidated by the volume of hand crafted products some students are making however as much as I admire them, my practice is about concepts, ideas, campaigns and applying interdiscplinary outcomes. Not about making things. So I need to focus on this on not get distracted by thinking I need to hand make products.

Brief Two Advertorial

To be consistent with Unilever and Simple's usual marketing and promotional campaign I designed an Advertorial campaign.  I wrote the copy using facts and research from the sources documented. in the Design Context blog.

The Science
If greenhouse gas emissions keep rising at the current rate, scientists predict a global temperature rise of 2–6 °C by 2100. A warmer world will lead to other changes in the climate, including changing rainfall patterns, melting ice, rising sea level, faster evaporation and more frequent heat waves. The main link between water and energy is something we experience on a personal level every day,. Every time we shower or take a bath. Amazingly domestic water heating accounts for 5% of UK CO2 emissions and 10 to 25% of our energy bills.

How much hot water do you use in the shower?
To help us think about how much water we use when we shower take a look at the bath below. A daily 8 minute power shower uses a staggering 136 lites of water and costs £918 per year based on a typical family.

What can YOU do about this?
It really depends what floats your boat and what will remind you to take a shorter shower forever. The ideal
Waterwise recommends we shower for no more than five minutes a day. If this seems too difficult to achieve, why not just time your next shower and just take a couple of minutes off?

Keep it simple?
In the shower every time you wash with Precious Shower Gel remember shorter showers protect our planet.

Do the maths?
Send for a Precious Shorter Shower Pack and receive a free precious shower gel, how to measure your shower usage and a five minute timer.

Like technology?
Download the Precious Shorter Shower App.

To receive your free Precious Pack and further advice on using less hot water in the shower visit us at www.simplyprecious.co.uk or simply scan the QR code.

I came up with an idea of using a Bath as a simple visual metaphor of how much water showers actually use.  This is a 'measurement' most people can relate to.

The first Advertorial which I submitted mocked up as part of a magazine was a bit more difficult to read.  So I revisted this for submission and made the bath colours darker and also took the capitalisation off.

Brief 2 Further development

I made the diamante larger so they were more obvious and also added the word 'Precious'

I then decided to customise the name of the shower gel to fit with the campaign
