28 January Meeting with furniture student Tom Bent
Tom showed me around the workshops and then showed me some of the work he has done at Uni. He would like to focus on Garden Furniture when he leaves uni. His last two pieces have been Oak benches. His style is solid chunky traditional but with a contemporary twist. His FMP will incorporate looking at two potential businesses - one would be a bespoke business providing one off pieces the other would be targeting Garden Centres with 'batch' type furniture.
Names for the business: As he is considering moving back to his roots in the Peak District he is thinking of calling it Wye Furniture or Beats (a nickname) Funiture
He see Indigo Furniture as offering something similar to what he wants to make.
He also like Peter Cummings furniture who has appeared at the Chelsea Flower Show.
Tom is also considering seeing if he can exhibit a customised piece at the Harrogate Show,
Ideally he wants Branding and a website. I said we could maybe design something simple using Cargo just to get him an online presence.
This is some of his work.
I asked if if there was anything specific he wanted to convey with his identity. He said maybe something around the Oak as it lasts 25 years compared with pine for example which only last up to 10 years. "Stands the test of time'
Fortunately he didnt think it was a good idea using Tom Bent however there may be a play on words somewhere.
