Brief 8 Additional brief Alumni Logo

Design development for the Alumni logo

Twitter proved a useful source for other Alumni logos and names.  Many are obviously quite old in that they are coats of arms.

I started experiementing wih different typefaces then decided an actual logo would be needed.  I wanted the logo to reflect diversity and also be aspirational.  So I started designing ideas around Stars.  This quickly lead to me using the "A" to make the stars.

Eventually this became layered and almost created motion which appealed to me as I felt it reflected transitions, especially the overprint ones.  I experiemented with several typefaces initially just for aestheic appearance but then started researching typefaces which had been designed in 1846 ie the first graduating year.  I wanted to use a serif typefaces as I think it connotes tradition and quality more so than a san serif typeface.  Clarendon was designed by Hoffman in 1845.  Also Caslon although design in the 1780's had a revival in the 1840's.

I chose Baskerville in the end because the Serif font is steeped in history and tradition and also the shapes the Acreated were more interesting.  I really like how structured the star shape was yet in the centre was more organic and natural.  For this reason I felt this could appeal to a range of creatives

The issuu document below contains the design development of the star shape:
